Overview
Registered in 2005, 'Shade Finale' is a small hosta sport of a splashed seedling of unknown parentage. Its visual distinction derives from the strong contrast between dark green, very shiny leaf blades and creamy white, flat margins, with reddish petioles that do not distract from the foliage.
In the Garden
'Shade Finale' forms a compact, mound-like clump 12 inches (30.5 cm) tall and 18 inches (45.7 cm) in diameter, with a moderate growth rate. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical of hosta-growing zones, and its small size makes it suitable for rock gardens, troughs, or the front of shaded borders. Companion plants include small ferns, heucheras, or low-growing woodland perennials that complement its muted coloration.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture during the growing season, especially in warmer climates, and apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring. As with most hostas, monitor for slug and deer damage, though the small, firm leaves may be less appealing to pests than larger-leaved cultivars.
