Overview
Registered in 2015 by A. Scheer and M. Gilligan, 'Serpentine' is a medium-sized hosta distinguished by lime green leaves with gold margins, red petioles, and red scapes. The broadly ovate leaves, measuring 7.3 inches (18.5 cm) long and 5 inches (12.7 cm) wide, display a slightly shiny upper surface and a very shiny underside, with lightly wavy margins and a cordate base.
In the Garden
'Serpentine' forms a mound-like clump reaching 34 inches (86.4 cm) in diameter and 18.5 inches (47.0 cm) in height, with a fast growth rate. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical for hostas, and pairs well with ferns, heucheras, and other shade-tolerant perennials. Its compact size makes it suitable for border fronts or as a groundcover in shaded beds.
Care Notes
Water regularly to maintain consistent soil moisture, particularly during dry periods. Fertilize in early spring as new growth emerges; slug and deer damage may occur and should be managed as needed.
