Overview
Registered in 2001, 'Sergeant Pepper' is a medium-sized hosta of unknown parentage. Its most distinctive feature is the unusually wide, greenish-yellow margin that dominates the leaf surface, leaving only a narrow central band of medium green.
In the Garden
This cultivar forms a moderate-growing, mound-like clump reaching 28 inches (71.1 cm) in diameter and 14 inches (35.6 cm) in height. It performs best in partial to full shade, where the wide gold margins contrast effectively with the green center. The broadly ovate, moderately corrugated leaves with cordate bases and slightly rippled margins provide textural interest alongside ferns or woodland perennials. Its medium size makes it suitable for border fronts or shaded rock gardens.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture during establishment and throughout the growing season, applying a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, 'Sergeant Pepper' is susceptible to slug and deer damage, particularly on the dull-surfaced leaves.
