Overview

Registered in 1978 by P. Aden, this medium-sized cultivar resulted from a cross between *Hosta* 'Blue Cadet' (pod parent) and *Hosta* 'Tokudama' (pollen parent). 'Serendipity' is distinguished by its blue-green leaves with pronounced blue margins, a trait inherited from its parentage, and its compact, mounded growth habit.

In the Garden

'Serendipity' reaches approximately 14 inches (35.6 cm) in height and 18 inches (45.7 cm) in diameter, forming a dense clump suitable for the middle of a shaded border or as a groundcover in partial to full shade. Its leaves measure 8 inches (20.3 cm) long by 6 inches (15.2 cm) wide, with 12 pairs of veins, and the blue margins provide subtle contrast against the blue-green blade. This cultivar pairs well with ferns, heucheras, and other shade-tolerant perennials; its medium size makes it appropriate for small garden spaces but not for containers.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most blue-leaved hostas, 'Serendipity' is susceptible to slug damage and deer browsing in typical hosta-growing zones.
