Overview
Registered in 2000 as a sport of *Hosta* 'Go for Broke', 'Serapis' is a small variegated cultivar distinguished by its upright foliage with streaked margins, slightly shiny leaf surfaces, and a compact, moderate growth habit. The leaves are 4.5 inches (11.4 cm) long and 2.5 inches (6.4 cm) wide, with four vein pairs and tapered bases, forming a plant 9 inches (22.9 cm) tall and 15 inches (38.1 cm) in diameter.
In the Garden
With its small stature and upright form, 'Serapis' is well suited for the front of borders, rock gardens, or container plantings. It performs best in partial to full shade, as is typical for variegated hostas, where the leaf streaking remains most pronounced. Companion plants include small ferns, heucheras, or other miniature hostas that do not overwhelm its compact dimensions.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. As with most hostas, slug and deer damage may occur; monitor regularly and take protective measures if needed. This cultivar is hardy in typical hosta-growing zones.
