Overview
A sport of *Hosta* 'August Moon' registered in 1997, 'September Surprise' is a medium-sized cultivar distinguished by its blue-green leaves with wide, flat gold margins. The leaf blade is yellow-green with a medium green border measuring 0.63 inches (1.6 cm) wide, and the underside bears a glaucous bloom.
In the Garden
'September Surprise' forms a fast-growing, mound-like clump reaching 24 inches (61.0 cm) in height and 42 inches (106.7 cm) in diameter. It performs best in partial to full shade, as is typical for hostas, and its medium stature suits placement in the middle of a border or as a specimen in a shaded bed. The broad, rounded leaves pair well with ferns, astilbes, or other shade-tolerant perennials.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. As with most hostas, slug and deer damage may occur and should be managed through appropriate barriers or deterrents.
