Overview
Registered in 2009 by K. Walek of the American Hosta Society, *Hosta* 'September Sunrise' is a sport of *Hosta* 'August Moon' distinguished by its blue-green leaves with golden yellow margins that fade to a faint green edge. The ovate leaves, measuring 6 inches (15.2 cm) long and 5 inches (12.7 cm) wide, have a dull upper surface and a glaucous bloom beneath, with nine pairs of veins and a cordate base.
In the Garden
This medium-sized hosta forms a mound-like clump reaching 24 inches (61.0 cm) in height and 36 inches (91.4 cm) in diameter. It performs best in partial to full shade, where the blue-green leaf centers contrast with the golden margins. The golden yellow scapes, which can reach 30 inches (76.2 cm) in height, bear pale lavender flowers in midsummer. Suitable companions include ferns, astilbes, and other shade-tolerant perennials; its medium size makes it appropriate for border fronts or woodland gardens.
Care Notes
Water regularly to maintain consistent soil moisture, particularly during dry periods. Apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, it is susceptible to slug and deer damage, so protective measures may be necessary in areas where these pests are prevalent.
