Overview
Registered in 1986 by F. Williams and C. Williams, *Hosta* 'Sentinels' is a small variegated cultivar derived from a cross between *H. sieboldii* (pod parent) and *H. 'Lancifolia'* (pollen parent). Its leaves are distinguished by dark green margins surrounding a lighter center, with a glossy upper surface and four pairs of veins per leaf.
In the Garden
'Sentinels' reaches a mature diameter of 12 inches (30.5 cm) and a height of 8 inches (20.3 cm), making it suitable for the front of a border or as an edging plant in partial to full shade. Its compact size also suits container cultivation. Companion plants might include small ferns or *Heuchera* cultivars with contrasting foliage colors.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Slugs and deer may damage foliage, so monitoring and protective measures are advisable in typical hosta-growing zones.
