Overview

Registered in 1991 by J. Kulpa, this small sport of *Hosta* 'Whirlwind' is distinguished by its blue-green leaves with dark green margins and a waxy glaucous bloom on the upper surface. The cordate-based foliage, measuring 6.5 inches (16.5 cm) long and 4.5 inches (11.4 cm) wide with eight vein pairs, forms a compact mound.

In the Garden

With a mature diameter of 22 inches (55.9 cm) and height of 11 inches (27.9 cm), 'Second Wind' is suited to the front of borders, rock gardens, or as edging in partial to full shade. Its small size makes it appropriate for container cultivation. Companion plants include ferns, heucheras, and other small hostas that complement its blue-green tones.

Care Notes

Water regularly during dry periods, applying at soil level to avoid wetting the foliage. Fertilize in early spring with a balanced, slow-release formulation. The waxy leaf surface provides some resistance to slugs, though monitoring is advisable in damp conditions.
