Overview
Registered in 2009 by K. Walek (AHS), this large blue-green hosta arose from a seedling of unknown parentage. Its most distinctive features are the intensely blue-green margins, glaucous bloom on both leaf surfaces, and deeply corrugated, broadly ovate leaves with cordate bases.
In the Garden
'Hosta 'Sea Sapphire' forms an upright to mounding clump, with individual leaves reaching 10 inches (25.4 cm) in length and 8.5 inches (21.6 cm) in width. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical of blue-leaved hostas, where its glaucous coating remains most intact. The substantial, cupped foliage pairs well with ferns, astilbes, and other shade perennials that contrast in texture or color.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture during the growing season, particularly in warmer climates, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. The thick, corrugated leaves offer moderate resistance to slugs, though standard preventive measures are advisable in damp conditions.
