Overview
Registered in 2009 by K. Walek of the American Hosta Society, 'Sea Mist' is a large, mound-forming cultivar of unknown parentage. It is distinguished by broadly ovate, blue-green leaves with chartreuse margins that transition to gold, a glaucous bloom on the undersides, and a corrugated, cupped, slightly wavy leaf surface.
In the Garden
'Sea Mist' forms a slow-growing mound reaching 16 inches (40.6 cm) in height and 38 inches (96.5 cm) in diameter. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical for blue-leaved hostas, where the leaf color remains truest. Its substantial size makes it suitable as a specimen or in the middle to back of a shaded border, paired with ferns or astilbes; it is not suited for containers due to its mature dimensions.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as growth emerges. The thick, corrugated leaves offer moderate resistance to slugs, though deer may browse the foliage in typical hosta-growing zones.
