Overview
Registered in 2009 by K. Walek of the American Hosta Society, 'Sea Mermaid' is a large hosta cultivar of unknown parentage. It is visually distinctive for its heavily corrugated, broadly ovate blue-green leaves with glaucous bloom on both surfaces, edged in medium golden yellow margins that are slightly rippled.
In the Garden
This cultivar forms a mound-like clump reaching 30 inches (76.2 cm) in diameter and 16 inches (40.6 cm) in height. Its large, thick leaves with 13 vein pairs and cordate base make it suitable for part-shade to shade positions in typical hosta-growing zones. It pairs well with ferns, astilbes, and other shade perennials that contrast with its blue-green foliage and gold margins.
Care Notes
Water regularly during dry periods, particularly in the first growing season. Apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. As with most hostas, slug and deer damage may occur and should be managed through appropriate controls.
