Overview
Registered in 1981 by M. Seaver, this medium-sized cultivar is a hybrid distinguished by its dark green leaves edged with narrow white streaks and a variable white center streak, which ranges from 0.12 to 1.25 inches in width and may show mottling. The upright foliage, measuring 14 inches (35.6 cm) long and 3 inches (7.6 cm) wide with seven vein pairs, gives the plant a distinctive striped appearance.
In the Garden
Reaching a mature size of 10 inches (25.4 cm) in diameter and 14 inches (35.6 cm) in height, 'Sea Lightning' forms an upright clump suitable for partial to full shade in typical hosta-growing zones. Its medium stature and narrow leaves make it a good choice for the front of a border or as an accent among ferns, heucheras, or other shade-tolerant perennials. The tall scapes, which rise 46 to 52 inches (116.8 to 132.1 cm) high, hold flowers well above the foliage.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture during the growing season, applying a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. This cultivar is susceptible to slug damage and deer browsing, though its narrow leaves may be less appealing to slugs than broader-leaved hostas. It produces very few seed pods, so propagation is best achieved through division.
