Overview
Registered in 1991 by M. Seaver and P. Ruh, 'Sea Grotto' is a large blue-green hosta cultivar of unknown parentage. It is visually distinctive for its broad, cordate leaves with blue-green margins and prominent veining, forming a dense, mounded clump.
In the Garden
This cultivar reaches a mature height of 17 inches (43.2 cm) and spreads to 23 inches (58.4 cm) in diameter, making it suitable for mid-border or groundcover positions in partial to full shade. Its large, blue-green foliage pairs well with ferns, heucheras, and other shade-tolerant perennials. The scape rises to 18.5 inches (47.0 cm) and bears pale lavender flowers in midsummer.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most large-leaved hostas, 'Sea Grotto' is susceptible to slug and deer damage and may require protective measures in areas where these pests are prevalent.
