Overview

Registered in 1978 by M. Seaver, *Hosta* 'Sea Drift' is a large, variegated sport derived from *H. 'Green Piecrust'*. It is visually distinctive for its broad, dark green leaves with narrow, undulating margins and a substantial, mounded habit.

In the Garden

'Sea Drift' forms a dense clump reaching 36 inches (91.4 cm) in diameter and 12 inches (30.5 cm) in height, with individual leaves up to 12 inches (30.5 cm) long and 7 inches (17.8 cm) wide. It performs best in partial to full shade, where its dark green foliage and subtle marginal undulations are most pronounced. Its large size makes it suitable as a specimen or as a groundcover in shaded borders, pairing well with ferns, astilbes, and other shade-tolerant perennials. It is not recommended for container cultivation due to its mature dimensions.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. 'Sea Drift' is moderately resistant to slugs but may require protection in particularly damp conditions; deer browsing is a potential concern in areas with high deer pressure.
