Overview
Registered in 2009 by K. Walek through the American Hosta Society, 'Sea Dragon' is a giant blue-green hosta of unknown parentage. Its most distinctive features are the broadly ovate, moderately corrugated leaves, which reach 17.25 inches (43.8 cm) in length and 13.25 inches (33.7 cm) in width, with medium to dark green, slightly rippled margins and a thin glaucous bloom on the undersides.
In the Garden
'Sea Dragon' forms an upright to mounding clump that reaches giant proportions, making it suitable as a specimen or focal point in the shade garden. It performs best in partial to full shade, as is typical for blue-leaved hostas, and pairs well with ferns, astilbes, and other woodland perennials that appreciate similar conditions. Its substantial leaf size and corrugated texture provide strong visual contrast against finer-textured companions.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Standard slug and deer precautions are advisable, as the large leaves may be attractive to both pests in typical hosta-growing zones.
