Overview
Registered in 2004 by an unknown hybridizer, 'Sea Beacon' is a medium-sized hosta distinguished by its blue-green leaves with unusually wide, creamy white margins. The leaf margins measure 1 to 2 inches (2.5 to 5.1 cm) across and retain bright coloration even in shaded conditions, a notable trait for variegated cultivars.
In the Garden
'Sea Beacon' forms a mound-like clump reaching 24 inches (61.0 cm) in height and 36 inches (91.4 cm) in diameter, with a moderate growth rate. It performs best in partial to full shade, where the wide cream margins maintain their brightest color. The ovate, lightly corrugated leaves with flat bases and 9 vein pairs provide textural contrast when paired with fine-leaved perennials such as ferns or *Heuchera*. Its green scapes, 20 to 36 inches (50.8 to 91.4 cm) tall, bear typical hosta flowers in midsummer.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, especially during establishment, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as growth emerges. As with most hostas, slug and deer damage may occur; monitor for slug activity on the dull-surfaced leaves in damp conditions.
