Overview
Registered in 2009 by K. Walek of the American Hosta Society, *Hosta* 'Sea Aquarius' is a giant cultivar of unknown parentage distinguished by its deeply corrugated, ovate blue-green leaves with cordate bases. The foliage carries a heavy glaucous bloom on both surfaces, contributing to its muted, cool-toned appearance.
In the Garden
'Sea Aquarius' forms a substantial mound 28 inches (71.1 cm) tall and 58 inches (147.3 cm) wide, with a moderate growth rate. It performs best in partial to dappled shade, as is typical for blue-leaved hostas, where the glaucous bloom is best preserved. Its large, textured leaves make it suitable as a specimen or accent in shaded borders, and it pairs well with ferns, astilbes, and other shade-tolerant perennials that contrast its broad foliage.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. The thick, corrugated leaves offer some resistance to slug damage, though monitoring may still be necessary in damp conditions; deer may browse the foliage.
