Overview

Registered in 2016, *Hosta* 'Scimitar' is a medium-sized cultivar bred from *H. 'Neptune'* (pod parent) and *H. 'Maya Kingsnake'* (pollen parent). It is visually distinctive for its lance-shaped, blue-green leaves with moderately wavy, serrated margins and persistent white leaf backs that contrast with the dull green undersides.

In the Garden

'Scimitar' forms a mound-like clump reaching 18 inches (45.7 cm) in height and 36 inches (91.4 cm) in diameter, with a moderate growth rate. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical for blue-leaved hostas, where its leaf color remains truest. The lance-shaped foliage, measuring 11 inches (27.9 cm) long and 4.5 inches (11.4 cm) wide with eight vein pairs, pairs well with ferns, heucheras, and other shade perennials that complement its medium blue-green tones.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture during dry periods, especially in the first growing season to establish roots. Apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new shoots emerge. Like most hostas, 'Scimitar' is susceptible to slug and deer damage; monitoring and protective measures may be needed in typical hosta-growing zones.
