Overview
Registered in 2003, 'Scally Cap' is a medium-sized hosta of unknown pollen parentage, derived from an F-1 seedling of *Hosta* 'Bravo'. It is visually distinctive for its blue-green, ovate leaves with a glaucous bloom on the undersides, lightly wavy margins, and notably red petioles that contrast with the foliage.
In the Garden
'Scally Cap' forms a mound-like clump reaching approximately 10 inches (25.4 cm) in height and 30 inches (76.2 cm) in diameter, with a medium-fast growth rate. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical of most hostas, and its compact habit suits it for the front of borders, rock gardens, or container culture. The purple scapes, rising 16 to 21 inches (40.6 to 53.3 cm) above the foliage, provide a floral display that complements the blue-green leaves.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like many hostas, 'Scally Cap' is susceptible to slug and deer damage, so appropriate deterrents may be necessary in areas where these pests are prevalent.
