Overview
Registered in 1999 by M. Zilis and N. Suggs, 'Savannah' is a large sport of a seedling of unknown parentage. It is distinguished by its dark green leaves with broad, creamy white margins, a slightly shiny upper surface, and a very shiny underside.
In the Garden
'Savannah' forms a substantial mound 25 inches (63.5 cm) tall and 60 inches (152.4 cm) in diameter, making it suitable for the middle to back of a border or as a specimen plant. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical for hostas, and its large, variegated foliage provides strong contrast when paired with ferns, heucheras, or fine-textured grasses. The green scapes, reaching 24 to 36 inches (61.0 to 91.4 cm), bear lavender flowers in midsummer.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, 'Savannah' is susceptible to slug and deer damage; regular monitoring and control measures may be necessary in affected gardens.
