Overview

Registered in 2003 as a sport of *Hosta* 'Savannah', 'Savannah Emerald' is a large, fast-growing cultivar distinguished by its variegated foliage: medium green leaf centers with flat, lighter green margins. Its leaves are ovate with cordate bases, moderately wavy, and slightly shiny on the upper surface, reaching 10.75 inches (27.3 cm) long and 6.5 inches (16.5 cm) wide with 8 to 10 vein pairs.

In the Garden

'Savannah Emerald' forms a substantial mound 22 inches (55.9 cm) tall and 52 inches (132.1 cm) in diameter, making it suitable as a specimen or in mixed borders where its large, variegated leaves provide textural contrast. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical of hosta-growing zones, and pairs well with ferns, astilbes, and other shade-tolerant perennials. Its size precludes container cultivation for most gardeners.

Care Notes

Water regularly to maintain even soil moisture, especially during dry periods; apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Slugs and deer may feed on the foliage, so monitoring and appropriate controls are advisable.
