Overview

Registered in 2012, *Hosta* 'Satin Doll' is a medium-sized sport of *Hosta* 'Hearts and Flowers' (pod parent) with unknown pollen parent. This cultivar is visually distinctive for its ovate leaves with cordate bases, green centers, and wide, dark green, slightly rippled margins, combined with a satiny upper surface and good substance.

In the Garden

'Satin Doll' forms a moderate-growing, mound-like clump reaching 9 inches (22.9 cm) in height and 24 inches (61.0 cm) in diameter. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical for hostas, where its variegated foliage remains stable. The medium size and attractive leaf pattern make it suitable for border fronts, woodland gardens, or as a groundcover beneath deciduous trees; it pairs well with ferns, astilbes, and other shade-tolerant perennials.

Care Notes

Water regularly during dry periods, especially in the first growing season, and apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, 'Satin Doll' is susceptible to slug and deer damage; monitoring and protective measures may be needed in gardens where these pests are prevalent.
