Overview

Registered in 1986 by E. Fisher and the American Hosta Society, 'Satin Beauty' is a giant variegated hosta of unknown parentage. Its most distinctive features are large, glossy leaves with medium green centers and slight undulating margins, combined with exceptionally tall scapes that can reach nearly six feet.

In the Garden

This cultivar reaches giant proportions, with leaves up to 13.25 inches (33.7 cm) long and 11.25 inches (28.6 cm) wide, forming a substantial clump suitable as a specimen or background plant in partial to full shade. Its glossy foliage and tall scapes—ranging from 50 to 69 inches (127.0 to 175.3 cm)—make it effective in woodland gardens or at the back of shaded borders. It pairs well with ferns and other shade-tolerant perennials that do not compete for visual attention.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture, especially during establishment, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as growth emerges. Like most large-leaved hostas, it is susceptible to slug damage and deer browsing in typical hosta-growing zones.
