Overview
A sport of *Hosta* 'Frances Williams' registered in 1998, 'Sara's Sensation' is a large, mound-forming cultivar distinguished by its broad, cordate green leaves with wide, yellow, slightly rippled margins. The leaf blades reach 11 inches (27.9 cm) in length and 9 inches (22.9 cm) in width, with 18 pairs of veins, and exhibit a dull surface on both sides.
In the Garden
'Sara's Sensation' forms a substantial clump 46 inches (116.8 cm) in diameter and 20 inches (50.8 cm) in height, with a slow growth rate. It performs best in partial to full shade, where the yellow margins maintain their color without scorching. The large, bold foliage makes it suitable as a specimen or as part of a mixed shade border, where it pairs well with ferns, astilbes, and other shade-tolerant perennials. Its size precludes container cultivation for most gardeners.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like many large-leaved hostas, 'Sara's Sensation' is susceptible to slug and deer damage, and protective measures may be necessary in areas where these pests are prevalent.
