Overview
Registered in 2013, 'Sand Storm' is a medium-sized variegated hosta derived from a seedling of Apple B crossed with *Hosta nigrescens* 'Elatior', then open-pollinated. Its most distinctive feature is a three-zone leaf coloration: a dark green margin with a lime green inner edge surrounding a sand-colored center that, as the plant matures, develops a cream white streak through the central portion.
In the Garden
'Sand Storm' forms a mound 20 inches (50.8 cm) tall and 24 inches (61.0 cm) in diameter, with a moderate growth rate. Its nearly round, lightly corrugated leaves measure 8 inches (20.3 cm) long by 7 inches (17.8 cm) wide, with cordate bases and slightly rippled margins. The scape reaches 30 inches (76.2 cm) and is very light green. This cultivar performs well in typical hosta-growing zones, preferring partial to dappled shade; it pairs effectively with ferns, heucheras, and other shade-tolerant perennials that complement its muted, sandy tones.
Care Notes
Water regularly to maintain even moisture, especially during dry periods. Fertilize in early spring as growth emerges. Like most hostas, 'Sand Storm' is susceptible to slug and deer damage; protective measures may be necessary in high-pressure areas.
