Overview
Registered in 1981 by G. Krossa and P. Ruh, 'Samual Blue' is a medium-sized hosta cultivar of unknown parentage distinguished by its heavily glaucous, powdery blue-green leaves with powdery blue margins. The upright, mounded foliage presents a uniform blue cast due to the thick waxy bloom on the upper leaf surfaces.
In the Garden
'Samual Blue' forms a symmetrical clump reaching 19 inches (48.3 cm) in both height and diameter, with individual leaves measuring 8.5 inches (21.6 cm) long by 6.5 inches (16.5 cm) wide and bearing 14 pairs of veins. Its medium size and upright habit suit it for mid-border positions or as a specimen in partial to full shade, where the blue coloration is most pronounced. Companion plants with contrasting foliage textures, such as ferns or fine-leaved grasses, complement its broad, powdery leaves.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. The thick leaves offer moderate slug resistance, though standard slug control measures are advisable in damp conditions; deer may browse the foliage in spring.
