Overview
Registered in 2004 from unknown parentage, *Hosta* 'Salus' is a small, mound-forming cultivar distinguished by its green leaves with golden yellow margins and notably strong spring gold coloration. The broadly ovate leaves measure 5 inches (12.7 cm) long by 3.5 inches (8.9 cm) wide, with slightly rippled margins, six vein pairs, and a lightly wavy texture; both surfaces are slightly shiny.
In the Garden
'Salus' forms a compact mound 8 inches (20.3 cm) tall and 18 inches (45.7 cm) in diameter, with a moderate growth rate. It performs best in partial to dappled shade, where the gold margins remain brightest, and is well-suited to rock gardens, woodland edges, or the front of shaded borders. Its small size makes it an excellent candidate for container cultivation or as a groundcover in small-scale plantings, paired with fine-textured ferns or small spring bulbs.
Care Notes
Water regularly during dry periods to maintain even soil moisture, and apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, 'Salus' is susceptible to slug and deer damage, so protective measures may be necessary in areas where these pests are prevalent.
