Overview
Registered in 2001, 'Sails at Sunset' is a large hosta cultivar resulting from a cross between *Hosta* 'Dorothy Benedict' (pod parent) and *Hosta hypoleuca* (pollen parent). It is visually distinctive for its broadly ovate, moderately twisted leaves that are greenish yellow with dark green, slightly rippled margins, and a glaucous bloom on the undersides.
In the Garden
This cultivar reaches a mature diameter of 26 inches (66.0 cm) and a height of 20 inches (50.8 cm), with upright foliage. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical of most hostas, and its large, twisted leaves provide textural contrast in woodland borders or shaded beds. The glaucous green scapes, reaching 22 to 26 inches (55.9 to 66.0 cm) in height, bear pale lavender flowers in midsummer. Companion plants such as ferns or astilbes complement its bold foliage.
Care Notes
Water regularly to maintain consistent soil moisture, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. This cultivar is susceptible to slug and deer damage, so protective measures may be necessary in garden settings.
