Overview

Registered in 2009 as an open-pollinated seedling of *Hosta* 'Rosedale Black Hole', *Hosta* 'Sagittarius' is a large, fast-growing cultivar distinguished by its green leaves with greenish-yellow flat margins and moderately corrugated, broadly ovate leaf blades with cordate bases. The plant produces dull-surfaced leaves, 10 inches long and 8 inches wide, with 13 to 14 vein pairs, and scapes reaching 22 to 26 inches in height bearing greenish-yellow flowers.

In the Garden

*Hosta* 'Sagittarius' forms a mound 30 inches in diameter and 22 inches tall, making it suitable for mid-border or specimen placement in partial to full shade, typical of hosta-growing zones. Its large, moderately wavy leaves pair well with ferns, astilbes, or other shade-tolerant perennials that contrast with its gold-margined foliage. The plant's fast growth rate and ability to set many seeds make it useful for naturalized shade gardens, though it is not recommended for container cultivation due to its mature size.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture during the growing season, applying a balanced slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. As with most hostas, protect emerging shoots from slug and deer damage, particularly in damp conditions.
