Overview
Registered in 2000 as a hybrid of *Hosta* 'Halcyon', 'Sabertooth' is a small-sized cultivar distinguished by its blue-green foliage with slightly rippled margins and a glaucous bloom on the leaf undersides. The leaves measure 5 inches (12.7 cm) long by 3 inches (7.6 cm) wide, with 5 to 7 vein pairs and tapered bases, forming a dense mound 18 inches (45.7 cm) tall and 30 inches (76.2 cm) in diameter.
In the Garden
This cultivar performs best in partial to full shade, where its blue-green leaves retain their color. With a fast growth rate and compact dimensions, it is well-suited for the front of borders, rock gardens, or container plantings. Its small size makes it an effective groundcover in shaded areas, and it pairs well with other shade-tolerant perennials such as ferns or heucheras.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, 'Sabertooth' is susceptible to slug and deer damage, so appropriate control measures may be necessary in areas where these pests are prevalent.
