Overview
Registered in 2009, *Hosta* 'Ruffed Up' is a medium-sized cultivar of unknown pollen parentage, with *H.* 'Bottom Line' as its pod parent. It is visually distinctive for its intensely wavy, broadly ovate leaves that are blue-green with heavily rippled, yellow to chartreuse margins, and for its ability to tolerate more sun than typical hostas.
In the Garden
'Ruffed Up' forms a dense, fast-growing mound reaching approximately 25 inches (63.5 cm) in height and 55 inches (139.7 cm) in diameter, making it suitable as a specimen or for mid-border placement. It performs well in partial to full shade but, notably, can take considerable sun, which intensifies the leaf margins from chartreuse to bright yellow. Companion plants include ferns, heucheras, and shade-tolerant grasses; its medium size also suits large containers.
Care Notes
Water regularly to maintain even moisture, especially in sunnier sites, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as growth emerges. While slugs may damage foliage, the thick, rippled leaves offer some resistance; deer browsing is possible in typical hosta-growing zones.
