Overview
Registered in 2004 as a sport of *Hosta* 'Royal Tiara', 'Royal Wave' is a small, mound-forming cultivar distinguished by its tricolor leaf pattern. The leaves are broadly ovate, slightly blue-green with a central streak of pure white, bordered by a greenish-yellow, rippled margin that gives the foliage a lightly twisted and wavy appearance.
In the Garden
'Royal Wave' reaches a mature height of 8 inches (20.3 cm) and spreads to 16 inches (40.6 cm) in diameter, making it suitable for the front of borders, rock gardens, or container plantings. It thrives in partial to full shade, typical of hosta-growing zones, and pairs well with ferns, heucheras, and other small shade perennials. Its moderate growth rate and compact habit allow for easy integration into mixed shade beds.
Care Notes
Water regularly to maintain consistent soil moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, 'Royal Wave' is susceptible to slug and deer damage, so protective measures may be necessary in areas where these pests are prevalent.
