Overview

Registered in 2005 by P. Ruh and D. Pallone, this medium-sized variegated hosta originated as an open-pollinated seedling from *Hosta* 'Regal Rhubarb'. The cultivar is distinguished by its medium green leaves with flat margins, a dull upper surface and very shiny underside, and notably by its petioles which are spotted carmine red and extend into the leaf base.

In the Garden

'Royal Rhubarb' forms an upright, moderate-growing clump reaching approximately 38 inches (97 cm) in diameter and 26 inches (66 cm) in height. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical for variegated hostas, and is suitable for borders, woodland gardens, or as a specimen plant. Its medium size and upright habit allow pairing with ferns, heucheras, or other shade perennials that contrast with its red-spotted petioles.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture during the growing season, particularly in warmer climates. Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. As with most hostas, slug and deer damage may occur; monitor and manage as needed. This cultivar is hardy in typical hosta-growing zones.
