Overview
Registered in 1988 by Caprice Farm Nursery, 'Royal Quilt' is a giant blue-green hosta arising from a cross of *H.* 'Great Lakes' as seed parent and (*H.* 'Fortunei Robusta' × *H.* 'Ryan's Big One') as pollen parent. Its most distinctive features are the exceptionally broad, heavily textured leaves with frosty blue margins and prominent veining, creating a quilted appearance that gives the cultivar its name.
In the Garden
This giant hosta reaches 24 inches (61.0 cm) in height and 30 inches (76.2 cm) in diameter at maturity, with leaf blades measuring 11 inches (27.9 cm) long by 13 inches (33.0 cm) wide. It performs best in partial to full shade, where the blue-green coloration remains most intense. The substantial leaf size and bold texture make it an effective specimen or anchor plant in shaded borders, and it pairs well with ferns, astilbes, and other shade-tolerant perennials. Scapes rise 30 to 36 inches (76.2 to 91.4 cm) above the foliage, bearing lavender flowers in midsummer.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. As with most large-leaved hostas, slug and deer damage can occur; monitor regularly and employ controls as needed in typical hosta-growing zones.
