Overview
Registered in 2004 by E. Deckert as a sport of *Hosta* 'Blue Mouse Ears', 'Royal Mouse Ears' is a miniature hosta distinguished by its small, cupped, nearly round leaves of medium blue-green with greenish-yellow flat margins. The leaf surface is dull above with a glaucous bloom beneath, and the substance is notably excellent for a miniature.
In the Garden
'Royal Mouse Ears' forms a dense, mound-like clump reaching 5 inches (12.7 cm) in height and 9 inches (22.9 cm) in diameter, with a moderate growth rate. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical for hostas, and is well-suited to rock gardens, troughs, or the front of shaded borders. Its compact size makes it an excellent choice for container cultivation, and it pairs effectively with other small perennials such as *Heuchera* or *Tiarella*.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, particularly during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. While the thick leaf substance offers some resistance, standard slug and deer precautions are advisable in areas where these pests are prevalent.
