Overview

Registered in 2016 as a sport of the giant hosta *H. 'Empress Wu'*, 'Royal Empress' is distinguished by its massive mound of broadly ovate, medium green leaves with wide, flat chartreuse margins that remain consistent in color throughout the growing season. The leaves are lightly cupped and corrugated, measuring up to 17 inches (43.2 cm) long and 10 inches (25.4 cm) wide, with 17 vein pairs and a slightly shiny upper surface.

In the Garden

'Royal Empress' forms a fast-growing, mound-like clump reaching 60 inches (152.4 cm) in diameter and 32 inches (81.3 cm) in height, placing it in the giant size class. It is notable for its tolerance of full sun, unlike many variegated hostas, while also performing well in partial shade. Its substantial scale makes it suitable as a specimen or focal point in large borders and woodland gardens; it is not recommended for containers due to its ultimate size.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture, especially during establishment, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. While more sun-tolerant than typical variegated cultivars, 'Royal Empress' may still benefit from protection from the hottest afternoon sun in warmer climates. Standard slug and deer deterrents are advisable in areas where these pests are prevalent.
