Overview

Registered in 2000 by Rosedale Gardens, this medium-sized hosta is a variegated seedling from the cross of *H.* 'RD-BS' and *H.* '742'. Its leaves are distinguished by streaked margins, a pattern that sets it apart from many margin-variegated cultivars.

In the Garden

'Hosta Rosedale Waterwheel' forms a medium-sized clump, with leaves reaching 8 inches (20.3 cm) in length and 5 inches (12.7 cm) in width. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical for hostas, and reaches a mature spread of approximately 18–24 inches. Its variegated foliage pairs well with ferns, heucheras, and other shade-tolerant perennials.

Care Notes

Water regularly during dry spells, particularly in the first growing season. Fertilize in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, it is susceptible to slug and deer damage; protective measures may be necessary in areas where these pests are prevalent.
