Overview
Registered in 1999, this giant variegated hosta originated from a cross between *H.* 'RD-BS-1' (pod parent) and *H.* 'Galaxy' (pollen parent). The cultivar is visually defined by its very large leaves—reaching 16 inches (40.6 cm) in length and 14 inches (35.6 cm) in width—with dark green margins framing a lighter center.
In the Garden
With its giant stature, 'Rosedale Richie Vallens' commands substantial space in the shade garden, reaching a mature spread of 4 to 5 feet. It performs best in partial to full shade, where the dark green margins remain distinct without scorching. This cultivar pairs well with ferns, *Heuchera*, and other broad-leaved shade perennials; its size makes it unsuitable for containers.
Care Notes
Water regularly to maintain consistent moisture, especially during dry periods. Apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Slugs and deer may damage foliage; monitor and manage as needed in typical hosta-growing zones.
