Year registered2000
Section classIII-7

Overview

Registered in 2000, this medium-sized hosta cultivar originated as a hybrid of *Hosta* 'RD-BS'. Its most distinctive feature is the streaked marginal variegation on leaves that reach 7 inches (17.8 cm) in length and 6 inches (15.2 cm) in width.

In the Garden

'Rosedale Jack of Spades' performs best in partial to full shade, where its variegated foliage remains most stable. As a medium-sized hosta, mature clumps form a substantial mound suitable for mid-border positions or as a specimen in shaded beds. It pairs well with ferns, heucheras, and other shade-tolerant perennials that complement but do not overwhelm its patterned leaves.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture during the growing season, particularly in warmer weather, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, it is susceptible to slug and deer damage, requiring protective measures in areas where these pests are prevalent.
