Overview
Registered in 1999 by Rosedale Gardens, 'Rosedale Golden Egg' is a medium-sized hosta cultivar derived from the cross of H. 'RD-BS-1' and H. 'RD-BSS-3'. Its leaves are green with golden yellow margins, the latter described as 7 inches (17.8 cm) long and 6 inches (15.2 cm) wide.
In the Garden
This cultivar reaches a medium mature size, with leaves of approximately 7 by 6 inches (17.8 by 15.2 cm). It performs best in partial to full shade, typical for hostas, and benefits from consistent moisture. The gold-margined foliage pairs well with ferns, heucheras, and other shade perennials; it is also suitable for container culture given its moderate dimensions.
Care Notes
Water regularly to maintain even soil moisture, particularly during dry periods. Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, 'Rosedale Golden Egg' is susceptible to slug and deer damage; appropriate controls should be considered in areas where these pests are prevalent.
