Overview
Registered in 1999 by Rosedale Gardens, this medium-sized hosta is a seedling of two unnamed Rosedale selections, H. 'RD-BS-1' and H. 'RD-BSS-6'. Its most distinctive feature is the streaked light green and white variegation that appears within the leaf blade, set against a green center and broad white margins.
In the Garden
'Rosedale Frosted Malt' reaches a mature size typical of medium hostas, with leaves 8 inches (20.3 cm) long and 6 inches (15.2 cm) wide. It performs best in partial to full shade, where the white margins and streaked interior remain crisp without scorching. This cultivar works well in mixed shade borders, woodland gardens, or as a specimen in containers, pairing effectively with ferns, heucheras, and other shade-tolerant perennials.
Care Notes
Water regularly to maintain consistent soil moisture, especially during dry periods. Apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, it is susceptible to slug and deer damage; protective measures may be necessary in areas where these pests are prevalent.
