Overview
Registered in 1999, 'Rosedale Big Bopper' is a giant variegated hosta resulting from a cross between *Hosta* 'Sum and Substance' (pod parent) and *Hosta* 'Elegans' (pollen parent). Its most distinctive visual features are the large, medium green leaves with slightly rippled margins and a dull surface on both sides, combined with a cordate (heart-shaped) leaf base.
In the Garden
This cultivar reaches a mature spread of 52 inches (132.1 cm) and a height of 36 inches (91.4 cm), with an upright growth habit and slow growth rate. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical of most hostas, and its substantial size makes it suitable as a specimen plant or for use in the middle to back of a shaded border. The large leaves pair well with ferns, astilbes, or other shade-tolerant perennials that contrast in texture.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like many large-leaved hostas, 'Rosedale Big Bopper' may be susceptible to slug damage and deer browsing, so appropriate management measures should be considered.
