Overview
Registered in 1992 from unknown parentage, 'Rosebud' is a large variegated hosta distinguished by its broad, cordate leaves with medium green margins and a satiny sheen on the upper surface. The cultivar reaches 26 inches (66.0 cm) in height and spreads to 32 inches (81.3 cm) in diameter, with leaves measuring 12 inches (30.5 cm) long by 9 inches (22.9 cm) wide and bearing 11 vein pairs.
In the Garden
'Rosebud' performs best in partial to full shade, where its satiny leaf surface and variegated margins are most pronounced. At nearly 3 feet in diameter, this large specimen serves as a substantial groundcover or border accent in woodland gardens and shaded perennial beds. Its substantial foliage pairs well with ferns, astilbes, and other shade-tolerant perennials that contrast in texture or bloom color.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, particularly during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Standard slug and deer precautions are advisable, as both pests may damage the satiny foliage in typical hosta-growing zones.
