Overview
Registered in 1999, *Hosta* 'Roscoe' is a giant hybrid derived from the pod parent *Hosta* 'Elegans' and pollen parent *Hosta* 'Frances Williams'. The cultivar is visually distinctive for its large, heavily textured blue-green leaves with slightly rippled margins and a pronounced glaucous bloom on both surfaces.
In the Garden
*Hosta* 'Roscoe' forms a substantial mound 24 inches (61.0 cm) tall and 48 inches (121.9 cm) in diameter, with a notably slow growth rate. It performs best in partial to full shade, where its blue-green foliage retains its glaucous quality; excessive sun may diminish the bloom. The broad, cordate-based leaves (12 inches long by 10 inches wide) and tall green scapes (24 to 28 inches) make this cultivar suitable as a specimen or background plant in shaded borders, paired with ferns or other shade-tolerant perennials that contrast in texture or color.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture during establishment, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as growth emerges. As with many large-leaved hostas, slug and deer damage may occur and should be managed through cultural or physical controls.
