Overview

Registered in 2001 by G. Rasmussen, this miniature hosta results from a cross between *Hosta* 'Flamboyant' (pod parent) and *Hosta venusta* (pollen parent). 'Rock Island Line' is distinguished by its small, ovate leaves with a medium green center and sharply contrasting creamy white margins, a combination unusual for such a diminutive plant.

In the Garden

Mature plants reach approximately 5 inches (12.7 cm) in diameter and 1.5 inches (3.8 cm) in height, with a slow growth rate. The leaves measure 1.25 inches (3.2 cm) long and 0.75 inches (1.9 cm) wide, bearing three vein pairs and a slightly shiny surface on both sides. This cultivar performs best in partial to dappled shade, typical for miniature hostas, and is well suited to trough gardens, rockeries, or the front of a shaded border. Its small stature makes it an excellent candidate for container cultivation, where the sharp margin contrast is easily appreciated.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture during the growing season; apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. As with most hostas, slug and deer damage may occur and should be managed preventatively in typical hosta-growing zones.
