Year registered1992
Section classIV-1

Overview

Registered in 1992, this small hybrid of *Hosta longipes* produces variegated foliage with light green, slightly rippled margins and a semi-glossy underside. The leaves reach 5.75 inches (14.6 cm) in length and 3.75 inches (9.5 cm) in width, with nine vein pairs, forming a compact mound 17 inches (43.2 cm) in diameter and 15 inches (38.1 cm) in height.

In the Garden

'Rock Happy' performs best in partial to dappled shade, where its variegated leaves maintain good color without scorching. Its small mature size makes it suitable for rock gardens, troughs, or the front of a shaded border, and it can be grown in containers with adequate drainage. Companion plants include small ferns, *Heuchera* cultivars, or dwarf *Astilbe* species that share similar moisture and light requirements.

Care Notes

Water regularly to keep soil evenly moist, especially during dry periods; apply a balanced slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Slugs and deer may damage foliage, so monitoring and protective measures are advisable in areas where these pests are prevalent.
