Overview

Registered in 2014 by an unknown originator, *Hosta* 'River of Gold' is a giant cultivar distinguished by its large, ovate green leaves with wide, pie-crusted golden yellow margins. The leaf surface is dull on both sides, and the margins are slightly rippled, creating a textured appearance.

In the Garden

This cultivar forms a substantial mound 23 inches (58.4 cm) tall and 40 inches (101.6 cm) in diameter, with a moderate growth rate. It performs best in partial to full shade, as is typical for hostas, and its large size makes it suitable as a specimen plant or for the back of a shaded border. The golden margins brighten darker areas of the garden, and it pairs well with ferns or other shade-tolerant perennials.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Slugs and deer may damage the foliage, so monitoring and appropriate deterrents are recommended in areas where these pests are prevalent.
