Overview

Registered in 2006, *Hosta* 'Rise and Shine' is a large cultivar derived from *Hosta* 'Bill Brincka' (pod parent) with an unknown pollen parent. It is visually distinctive for its bright spring foliage, which emerges with very vivid golden yellow margins that later fade to light green, contrasting with a green leaf center.

In the Garden

This cultivar forms a mound-like clump reaching 48 inches (121.9 cm) in diameter and 18 inches (45.7 cm) in height, with a moderate growth rate. It performs best in partial to full shade, as is typical for hostas, where its golden margins hold their color longest before fading. The large, broadly ovate to nearly round leaves (11 inches long by 9 inches wide) with slightly rippled margins and 12 to 13 vein pairs make it a substantial specimen for mid-border or woodland garden settings. Its light green to yellow scapes rise 42 to 54 inches (106.7 to 137.2 cm) above the foliage.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture, especially during establishment, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. As with most hostas, slug and deer damage may occur and should be managed preventively.
