Overview

Registered in 1986 by E. Nesmith and the American Hosta Society, 'Rippling Waves' is a giant variegated hosta derived from a cross between *Hosta glauca* and *H. sieboldiana*. The cultivar is distinguished by its large, heavily undulate leaves with dark green centers and wide, rippling margins.

In the Garden

This cultivar forms a substantial mound reaching 28 inches (71.1 cm) in height and 64 inches (162.6 cm) in diameter, with individual leaves measuring 14 inches (35.6 cm) long by 11.25 inches (28.6 cm) wide. It performs best in partial to full shade, where its textured foliage provides strong architectural presence in the middle to back of borders. Suitable companions include ferns, astilbes, and other shade-tolerant perennials that contrast with its bold form.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture during the growing season, particularly in warmer climates, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most large-leaved hostas, it is susceptible to slug and deer damage and may require protective measures in areas where these pests are prevalent.
